Do you ask for Functions or Scenarios?

Before testing: If you want a product with good UX, do you give the
programmers a list of functions or a list of scenarios?

Usually people write a functional spec for a software/website they want,
which they then give to the programmer. The programmer will create a
program/website with the functions you requested. The programmer comes back
and feels great about this product he created for you, with all the
functions you asked for, maybe even threw in a few extra.

You try the program and it has all the functions, but it is impractical.

IxDA Digest Translation

Based on Alexander's comment in the "Interaction Design in Europe"
thread last week, I decided to try feeding a few IxDA threads through
Google's translation API.

Any recommendations would be greatly appreciated

Physical world IxD: Kitchen design

Great little article for some inspiration [1]. Interviews with four chefs
about the (interaction) design of their kitchens and how, in some cases,
this contributes to the customer experience within the restaurant.

I love this kind of (albeit cursory) ethnographic observation. Helps me step
outside of web-orientated thinking...

(thanks Kottke.org for the heads-up)

Best practices for UGC mechanisms?

Hey all, I'd like to know what your experiences are with designing
online contests where site visitors get to upload/create stuff on a site
(to win a prize) which is being placed in gallery and where others get
to vote/rate the entries.

Some interesting questions concerning this subject are:

* How do you prevent cheating with voting/rating, without making
the barrier of voting to big?
(or more concrete: how do you prevent that contestants aren't
voting their entry to the top 10 themselves; is email validation, using
an activation mail, smart or too much effort and does something like
