Constructive criticism for this redesign?

I am not an employee of the company, had an interesting time trying
to maneuver around it this morning, and finally caught hold of the
ear of someone involved who wanted specific repsonse. What Spool Rules
(tm) [I just made that up, it sounded funny. I don't think Jared had
trademarked rules...yet] is this following or not following? Thanks!

[Event] Venue change - RSVP - London IxDA meeting, guest starring Dave Malouf

We're full.

Thanks to everyone who has RSVP'd. I'm sorry to have to call time
on any more attendees, even our capacious meeting room will struggle.
I have seen from Twitter that Dave's enjoying Britain (nice weather
we're having!) and I'm pulling some ideas together about having a
structured discussion as well as the usual free-form banter and

Don't forget the pub is open to ALL so if you couldn't make it for
the event at Dare [1] (08/MAY, 18:30) then join us from about 20.30
in the Yorkshire Grey (Fitzrovia). [2]

User Registration Processes: Double Opt-in success rates

Can anyone direct me to research on drop out rates for online systems that require a user to click a link in a verification email to complete a registration process? So far the only research I've found is related to email marketing. The system I am working on requires the user to be more actively engaged in the application and therefore I don't think the email research is applicable.

Fixed v/s variable width web pages

This topic has been explored many times from a web design POV, but rarely
from an IxD one. When would you use each of the options? Fixed width seems
to have become the de-facto choice in content based websites, and variable
width in online tools. A great compromise is the combo method where its
fixed above and/or below a certain resolution/ window size and variable
inbetween. Thoughts?

Have you heard of "Three-in-One User Study" for Focused Collaboration?

the latest issue of the International Journal of Design
(http://www.ijdesign.org/) has this interesting article that
introduces a human-centered design approach -- the Three-in-One User
Study -- which applies a set of methods to speed up and focus on the
design process.

Seattle Monthly IA/UX Meetup - May 13th

Once a month, we get together to have drinks, chat, network, and geek
out with fellow information architects, librarians, usability experts,
user experience designers, and other like-minded user-centered
professionals and students. It's open to anyone, so bring a friend --
especially those in other local organizations! The format will be
casual, but all are encouraged to bring something to discuss -- recent
work, an interesting topic, or even your resume.
