A New Approach to Interaction Design

Hello IxDA:

This message is to encourage you to preview and purchase a book which
describes a new perspective on IxD. While IxD appears in most
universities as either an adjunct of HCI or as a Design skill in the
department of Mulitmedia/Art, this treatise argues IxD as a scientific
pursuit which sees no boundaries to the topical application of its

Testing persuasiveness

Thought I'd crowdsource this via the giant brains on this list:
I'm working on some conversion point design and analysis for a new app and
would like to stick it in front of some users to see how it does. But all
the usability testing I've been involved with has been focused on task
completion, so I'm not exactly sure how to tweak the strategy to test the
persuasiveness of a design. I'm less concerned with the usability of the
design than how compelling it is.

Breadcrumb trail at the bottom of the browser window

Inspired by the recent Cuil discussion I've made a breadcrumb trail that's
always visible at the bottom of your browser window.
I'm testing it on an intranet where:

• users spend anywhere from five minutes to several hours every day

• there are thousands of pages in many folders, etc

• the built-in navigation scheme isn't always consistent, due to different
products/portals/systems being used

Lessons so far:

• with just one consistent navigation item at the bottom of the viewport,
it's easier to leave out all those top, left and right menus and concentrate
on maki

Getting into interaction design

Hi all,

A couple of questions to put to the readers here.

I have a degree in psych and a PhD in HCI both from good universities
and want to get a steady position in this field. I've done industrial
work (human factors multi-company collaboration into commercial
aircraft cockpit design - assessment and some design) and commercial
work (workflow apps both desktop & web-based, scientific desktop app,
oil exploration app - design, assessment, development) and educational
(commercial VLE - assessment).
