Do grid systems also apply to applicationinterfaces?

Grids are definitely applicable to application design and even device
design--everything we design at Cooper employs some type of grid system.
Mullet & Sano is a good reference.

Test structure recommendations

I'm starting to plan some tests for a site enhancement and would like
some of your thoughts on this.

Since there are a set of individual features to use, I was thinking
of asking subjects to start by spending a few minutes exploring the
site before asking them to perform specific tasks. What are the pros
and cons to this approach?

Q: Persistent header bar from FB and LinkedIn

I've noticed that if you click on an external link in Facebook or LinkedIn
(and other sites) it sometimes loads the new site in a frame below a header
bar that's branded for the originating site.

What I'm wondering is:

1. Is there a name for this technique?
2. How are they usually coded?
3. How do people feel about these headers? Are they helpful or intrusive?
