Favorite Discount/Rapid Research Methods

This past week I was having a discussion with another UX colleague and
he mentioned using a research method I'd never thought of. It's kind
of a mashup between a focus group and heuristic evaluation.

Interaction design can affect everyone

tons of examples:
Bank ATMs
All sorts of ticket vending machines (my faves of the moment):
MTA (New York City) metro card; Airport express train in both
Stockholm & Oslo
Price checkers
auto-open doors & windows
TV/Set top box systems
Keylocks in hotels
airline kiosks
all sorts of medical devices especially those for blood monitoring
and drug allocation.
electronic voting systems.

Which is more affective, ratings vs. recommendation

Does anyone have past experience with whether displaying a users
rating (average rating 3.5/5) vs. a users recommendation (65%
recommend this) performed better than the other on a commerce site.
Specifically a travel site but any commerce experience would probably
still be relevant.

Interaction design can affect everyone, not just people who own a computer. What does this mean for IxD?

As an example of the far-reaching impact of interaction design, I recently wrote about the Boston MBTA subway system and the Charlie kiosks that are used to purchase fares. Every day, hundreds of thousands of people ride the Boston subway and many of them are confused and frustrated by the interaction design of the kiosk.
