New here, overwhelmed.

With - as the search field caption proudly exclaims - over 6,500
threads, this site is pretty overwhelming for the newbie, such as
myself, so I wondered whether there was a good list of the best/most
interesting/most controversial/inspiring/etc. threads that we could
take a look at to get a feel of IxDA discussion and comment?

Working with more than one project at a time?

Hello

Have you faced difficulty making design decisions while you needed to
remember the different user needs from say 2 to 3 different projects
that you were working on at the same time? Can you share your
experience when switching the thinking?

Independent Contractor Hourly Rates and Startups

I am in the process of negotiating a pay rate for a independent
contractor position with a startup as an interaction designer. I am
wondering what are the current pay rates for independent contractors
for startups in the Bay Area? I have talked to some colleagues at
larger technology companies, but I was wondering if I would use the
industry standard and agree to some type of deferred payment plan for
a portion of my pay?

[EVENT] IxDA Pittsburgh Event Recap

The Pittsburgh chapter of the IxDA gathered last Wednesday in the
historic Terminal Buildings, home of Gist Design. Gist led us through
an exercise in which we role-played through a usability research
scenario. The attendees were assigned to either the client, the
research team, or the pool of respondents. Each person on the client
side was provided with a card explaining their role in the company and
their motivations, which they had to express in the initial meeting
with the research team.
