Cost-justifying Usability

My name is Andrea Richeson. I have worked in web design and
development for Texas state government for several years and am
currently a graduate student at the University of Texas School of
Information.

I am working with Dr. Randolph Bias, Dr. Eugenie Bertus, and graduate
student Jana Tate to co-author a book chapter on the use of return on
investment (ROI) methods.

Suggestions for universities

Friends,

A student at the Copenhagen Business School asked me to recommend university
programs in North America that can offer a bright exchange student a
meaningful curriculum in strategic communication and social media.

Any thoughts?

Best Practices in Portal Design

I'm writing a chapter on the design of portals for a human factors handbook (Handbook of Human Factors in Web Design, 2nd Ed.). I'm doing my best to dig up the current state of the art in this, but have come up with little formalized content. There was a brief IxDA discussion thread about this in May of 2008, referring to an excellent series of articles and related IxDA conference presentation on a portal design framework by Joe Lamantia.

Storyboards in Balsamiq?

Does anybody actually use the links in Balsamiq Mockups to make
storyboards that can be walked through to show the interaction of a
system? I looked at all the examples in the Balsamiq Mockup gallery and
they all seem to be single screens (except for one which shows a
Google-like interface with the first search-box screen and then a
search-results screen).
I'm wondering if folks use Blasamiq for actual storyboards, with links,
and branching, or if the predominant use is with independent un-linked
screen sketches.
Thanks,
Bonnie

User data order during light signup

Hi IxDA'ers,

I'm working on a project that captures user data for a newsletter
signup. The only mandatory field is the email address. We also ask
for name, job title and company name too.

My question:

If email is the only required field and we, as a business, want the
best conversion, does order of these fields matter?

Is the natural mental model name first then related information after
that?

Thanks,

-- Rob

PS. Is there any research to support either options and which have
better yields?

Fluid 960 Grid System: Rapid Prototyping. Tried it?

Has anyone used a fluid 960 grid framework for rapid prototyping?e.g.

I'm particularly interested in how usable it is for a UX person like
me with *some* (i.e. junior level) CSS/XHTML knowledge. I've had a
quick play with it, but wondering how practical and efficient it is
for 'mock ups' and client work.

I can see it being extremely efficient down the line when moving into
development (i.e.

SURVEY: Understanding the needs for Graduate IxD Education

Hello all you UXers,

I have put together a survey to try to better understand the needs for
graduate education in interaction design around the world.
I would appreciate a bit of time on your part (20-30min at most) to fill out
the survey to let me know something about you (anonymously of course).

This is not just for people who have gone through graduate education, but
for anyone practicing user experience and for those who hire user experience
designers.

So thank you in advance for your time.
