Functionality appearing below the mythical "fold" - what to do?

Hi all,

I'm working on a filtering system that employs filters on the
left-hand side of the results screen, much like rentals.com and

Our client is concerned that since the lower filters on the left are
hidden for folks with smaller screens that they won't be found.
Their proposed solution is to collapse the filter options so that
just each individual filter title is shown. I believe that this is
far less usable.

Active/inactive state of physical buttons

Hi all,

I'm wondering if anyone knows of a precedent for a certain pattern
in a physical interface, such as a control panel or remote control.

The challenge is that a particular control panel design has multiple
states; in a given state, some functions are available while other
functions are unavailable. I'm considering a pattern in which each
button lights up when it's active/available and gets dark when it's

There are certainly many devices with buttons that light up in order
to reflect the on/off state of a particular feature (e.g.

Survey design

I'm in the process of designing a survey for existing users of
consumer food site but don't have a lot of time to design it. Most
likely I will use survey monkey unless anyone has a better suggestion.

Can anyone point me to best practices for quick online survey design?

Many thanks

A few days ago I posted a question about existing materials out there on portal design (http://www.ixda.org/discuss.php?post=47358#47358). I'm very surprised that there was no response.

ANN: Warfel's book "Prototyping: A Practitioner's Guide" now available

(apologies for cross posting)

It's a pleasure to announce that Todd Zaki Warfel's book, *Prototyping: A
Practitioner's Guide, *is now available for purchase. In just under 200
pages, Todd provides a hugely practical take on a hugely practical topic,
and shows you how to prototype using approaches both low-tech (e.g., paper)
and high-tech (Axure and Fireworks).
