How to optimize for different screen resolutions.

Hi all,

I am working on a software interface which is going to be used by
healthcare professionals while counseling and fitting medical
instruments for patients at the same time. Setup is usually a
computer on a desk, operated by the healthcare professional while his
patient is sitting on the oposite side.

The current UI is optimzed for 1024 by 768. What we could observe
while visiting users is the fact, that most of them use 17" to 19"
screens. Some go bigger, some use 16:9 laptops.
But most use the 1024 by 768 even if the display supports much higher
resolutions.

Save vs Save and Exit

We're desigining an application for creating personalized photo books
through a Flash-based interface. When the application first opens, we
display a dialog encouraging the user to give their project a name
(if they don't, it just gets a default name).

Best Practice Guides and Online Profiles

I am currently redesigning a portion of an e-learning site; one of the
goals is to add an expanded online profile, which will be used when
the site adds more social features.

Currently, all profile questions are asked at the account creation
step and all are mandatory: age, gender, home town, country and
native language; the idea is that this data will help the company
analyze usage stats.

Category Best Practice for eCommerce site

Does anyone know of any research that provides insight into the
recommended number of categories and subcategories a store should
contain?

I know best practice is to keep the options simple and easy to scan
(7-12), but for an ecommerce site it tends to be whatever is
necessary to adequately cover the breadth of your products. I need
some evidence on where to draw the line.

Thanks

Explain IA

Hi Everyone,

On behalf of the IA Institute (http://iainstitute.org/), I'm pleased to announce Explain IA. In this contest, you are invited to explain information architecture. What is it? Why is it important? What does it mean to you? Some folks may offer a definition in 140 characters or less, while others will use this opportunity to tell a story (using text, pictures, audio, and/or video) about their relationship to information architecture.
