Design guidelines - good or bad - thoughts?

I'd like to get people's opinions on the value of "company-wide" design
guidelines (for software applications/websites)?

In theory, design guidelines could help to remove design bottlenecks by
empowering others
to create and apply the guidelines... but in reality they can also be hard
to implement, confusing,
restrictive, etc.

Is there any data on the successful use of design guidelines by

Social Network Open Source Platform - Recommendations?

I am looking for a Social Networking Platform (LAMP preferably) - Open
Source would be ideal, which will allow the user to see a specific
template once they login, dependant upon the domain they align
themselves to during sign-up.

The user chooses an email username, which is then attached to one of
200 domain names. This domain is branded and the user sees this once
they login through the main portal.

Any pointers?

ps: as for assigning email addresses - I am open to taking advice
here too!! :)

How do you sell UX?

For those out there who work as freelancers or standalone UX agencies,
what does your sales process look like?

Is it primarily selling to the companies who own the web properties,
attempting to convince them of the need for better UX, or is it more
strategic partnerships with development shops?

Seems like the latter is the most stable approach, and a somewhat
easier sell (since dev shops or other 'full-service' web shops are
at least familiar with the UX world).

What are you experiences?

Expression/Sketchflow workshops in Portland or Seattle?

Hi, all,

I've been through a fair number of the online video tutorials, but
nothing substitutes for hands-on training where you can ask the
questions that the tutorials assume you know the answer to. But I'm
having a hard time finding any classes or workshops for this. Are any
of you aware of such?

Happy 2010!
