How do you move from software to hardware UX? Care to share your insights? experience?

Good day to you'll.

I was wondering if anyone has transitioned from developing user experience
for software to hardware products?

I've been in the software/web environment for the past 8 - 10 years.
Experience ranges from packaged software to web applications , portals ,
Intranets, Search, mobile, etc...etc...

I would like to learn and explore experience design for the hardware
environment. ( E.g. Hand phones , MP3 players , Interactive TV,

Anyone care to share your insights on how you transitioned?

Creating User Interfaces to Work Within a CMS

I hear ya, Jennifer. I work with a coldfusion-based content management
system and I don't think the community is as big and those of PHP and
.Net. We have 1 developer on staff who for some reason or another,
does not know the CMS at all (go figure). Anyway, we are totally
locked into basically 4 template styles. Each of the template styles
have "elements" of the page that you can edit in either the wysiwyg
mode or the html mode. I basically resorted to exploiting the html
editing portion of the thing!

[Plug] Tamara Adlin's Ad-Hoc Personas Webinar - 2/18 - IXDA Offer

Hi everyone,

A while back, Melanie posted a great discussion about what she could
do with a 3-hour workshop of 20 stakeholders, to kick off a project.
(See the thread here: http://www.ixda.org/discuss.php?post=48067 )

Turns out, that's the topic of tomorrow's UIE Virtual Seminar with
Tamara Adlin.

Personas: how many is too many?

There is this project I'm working on that is for pet owners, breeders
and vets. They have identified 15 consumer types between the three
main segments I've mentioned. The client is requesting we create
personas for all 15. In my experience I've rarely have had to create
more than 4 on any given project. For this project I believe I can get
away with 3.

Does anyone have any thoughts as too what is too many or too few
personas? Have you come across a similar client request? And how did
you deal with it?

/- impacts of 'address verification systems' on online forms

>From a user point of view, yes, complexity will always increase
abandonment rates, however one of your stakeholders is the business
and if it keeps the data "clean" and data maintenance costs down
then that benefit has to come into the pro and con equation.

Validation and verification CAN help a user fix simple typos and
assure the User that the address has been entered correctly.

+/- impacts of 'address verification systems' on online forms

Hi all,

Has anyone had any experience with implementing an 'address
verification system' in online (application) forms?

These systems validate a user provided address against a database of
known addresses, usually provided by Postal services.

[Event] IxDA Seattle Happy Hour, Today, Feb 16

Time for the next 3rd Tuesday IxDA Happy Hour. I just got back from
the Interaction 10 conference in Savannah and all I can say is, if
you weren't there you missed out. But you can still come out to our
happy hour next week, catch up with some of the people who were
there, and discuss the future of interaction design.
