Hello everyone,

I am a Computer Science Engineer from Spain and I am very interested in pursuing a Master's Program in HCI in USA so, after an in-depth research and hours and hours of reading forum discussions and thinking about it seriously, this is my final Top 5:

1st - Master of Science in Human-Computer Interaction. Georgia Institute of Technology.

2nd - Professional Master's Program in Human Centered Design & Engineering. University of Washington.

Creating User Personas for Online Banking Redesign - Looking for great survey questions...

I'm part of a team working on a redesign of our company's online banking platform. The current platform is hosted by a third party so there are no analytics about user behavior once a customer logs in.

Best practices for drop down menus

I'm working on a site and want to use drop down menus so the user can see and navigate to subsections easily and quickly. My question is: "How do you let the user know the main category headings (e.g. About) are landing pages and contain content?  The obvious way is the have the word “About” repeated below in the listing of subpages but that seems inelegant. Any relevant research would be appreciated as well.

To hide or to disable?

There is ongoing discussion in my team about what is better behaviour for UI, when certain areas of the application are guarded by permission system. There are two main options:

  1. Hide it, so the user won't be distracted by elements they cannot use.
  2. Disable it, so they can see there is a function in the app they could use with the right permissions.

I won't say which side I took because i don't want to bias this thread.

I'll be grateful for your opinions?

Practical Reciprocation for Information

I remember a discussion about a year ago regarding reciprocation vs. reward a la "Neuro Web Design".  (Found this book very helpful, by the way.)  Our company has the ever-so-common situation of having whitepapers, brochures, etc.

HCI program: University of Michigan vs. University of Maryland - Thoughts on both programs?

Hi everyone,

I have recently been accepted into two HCI programs at the iSchools at the University of Michigan and the University of Maryland.

I had intended to go to Michigan, since I had thought that Maryland's due date for acceptance was March 9. But it's actually April 6. So now I have a few short days to decide which to go to!

For background, I come from a Psych/English double major with no programming experience, and some self-learned graphic design skills.
