Visual design manual for a software

I need to create a visual design manual as part of a user interface guideline document for a software. Does anyone have any pointers? It would be great with some examples. Thus far I have only found corporate branding manuals online... And those are mostly describing letterheads and other printed material.

Good Classes for Wannabe IXD

Hi All, I was too poor to get into a school that offered an IXD program so I'm trying to sculpt one from the night school I'm going to.

Do you have any suggestions of good classes to take? Any off the top of your head would be helpful, here is the link for my CSCI class options as well.

Thanks so much!

UX and Ad Revenue: What principles do you use to balance these sometimes competing requirements?

Most of the sites I've have worked on in the last several years have generated the bulk of their revenue through subscriptions or product sales.  My current project is to design a mobile website for a news/magazine organization that generates a lot of their revenue through ad sales.  In particular, they are looking at having a single advertiser "sponsor" their mobile website for an entire month.

edUi 2012 Conference Registration now Open

I thought I'd pass along this announcement to the IXDA community about registration opening for edUi 2012. The call for proposals is currently open as well.

What is edUi?
edUi is a conference for web professionals serving colleges, universities, libraries, museums, and other institutions of learning. Our focus is primarily on user interface and user experience design/development.

The 2012 conference is happening Sept. 24-26 in Richmond, VA.

UX Breakthrough - the AH-HA moment

Does anybody have any success stories to share about succesfully getting the company they work for to implement UX considerations into the development process and perhaps create a UX department that oversaw all of this?

Little bit of backstory:

I work for a small software development company (70-80 devs) that develops software for scientists in a niche market. We are growing very nicely. We have big communication issues but because "everything is fine", efforts to take UX more seriously are mostly ignored.

Announcing the opening of the Call for Proposals for hosting Interaction|14

I am pleased to formally open the Call for Proposals for cities interested in hosting the 2014 Interaction conference - the annual conference of the Interaction Design Association (IxDA).

Since its inception in 2008 Interaction has grown to be a significant and must-attend event for design professionals interested in the practice and discipline of interaction design. This year's event, held in Dublin, Ireland in conjunction with the Institute of Art, Design & Technology, Dun Laoghaire (IADT) attracted a record crowd in excess of 750 people from 32 countries
