Rebecca Walsh

Rebecca is Design Director at Big Motive and a Chartered Mechanical Engineer (IMechE). She holds an MEng (Hons) Aerospace Engineering from Queen’s University Belfast and brings over ten years of experience in user-centred design and service innovation to her role at Big Motive. Beginning her career in Bombardier Aerospace working exclusively in aerodynamic design, Rebecca joined Bombardier’s innovation team to work on future aircraft design. She also worked with the Department of Finance Innovation Lab as the first Service Designer in the Northern Ireland Civil Service (NICS) working across all regional government departments as well as local Government to promote service design and in particular user-centred design and design for citizens’ needs. Rebecca is responsible for the delivery of high-quality experience design projects for a range of Big Motive’s clients. Using her wealth of knowledge and expertise, she also delivers an interactive design-led module for the MBA programme at Queen’s University.
The Children’s code is a transformative code of practice that aims to better protect children in the digital world. Organisations that provide online services likely to be accessed by children must create transparent, age-appropriate experiences that are in children’s best interests, to conform with the code.
Designers play an important role in developing online services and making key decisions that shape children’s experiences. Over the last few months I have been working with the ICO to create the Children’s code UX design guidance to help designers understand how to apply the code in practice, ultimately making the digital world a safer place for children.
During this talk I will share the journey of creating the guidance and how designers from across the country have been helping with its development.”
