Based in Sydney, Australia, Molly has had years of experience solving business problems designing for a range of different brands and touchpoints. She brings a human centered focus that drives creative, meaningful, user-friendly solutions. Molly has worked arcoss a range of design disciplines both in-house and within agencies. She is passionate about human behaviour, ethics and solving complex problem spaces for businesses. Molly is also a local leader for the Sydney IxDA chapter.
Dark patterns are deceptive UX/UI interactions that have been carefully crafted to mislead users into behaviours that are detrimental to their experience. There are many ways for user experiences to cross an ethical line—or at least wade into a moral grey area. Designers are on the front lines of these concerns. The goal of designers should be to champion the needs of their users, including their users’ ethical expectations. We will explore dark patterns are, and a look at how effective design could lead to unethical results and why designers must strive to avoid it.
