How to Interpret Wildness in Interaction Design Education

Wildness for us is interpreted as the “ambiguous unexplored” — a place where both educators and students often find themselves. We propose that one role of education is to help people understand and dwell in that wildness — to accept it and to move through it, to experiment, and to change and be changed by it. Wildness is not the permanent state of interaction design education, but one that teachers and students of all stripes experience.

This edition of the Education Summit seeks to convene educators, learners, practitioners and companies to explore the different ways any of us might help others with that wildness. In particular, the summit is seeking out talks, workshops, and roundtable discussions that address two parts of this wildness. First, a discipline in flux, asks for you to share how you or your organization are helping learners navigate the rapid pace of change in the skills and theories necessary to be an excellent practitioner. Second, experimentation, is for those ways that you’ve been trying to bring new skills or methods to a group of learners. Especially, we’re interested in hearing about experiments in reaching learners that have not traditionally been reached by design education.

Our goal is a transformative experience: one that elevates your understanding, or opens the door to experimental methods, or that encourages you to take on the mantle of educator, in whatever capacity that entails. As a speaker or facilitator, you can help all attendees understand how you work with wildness. As an attendee, you will be shown new ways of coping with this wildness, and with any luck, meet new collaborators and be inspired to respond to the changing landscape of interaction design.

Why you should propose

We’re extending the deadline for the education summit by one week — proposals are now due by 14 October 2018. There are many reasons to propose, but the Education Summit is a great platform to share your successes to a broad audience of people engaged in various forms of interaction design education. It’s an opportunity to connect and find new collaborators in a more intimate setting. Finally, continuing on our tradition from last year, the proceedings of the Education Summit will be published to the IxDA community through medium. We hope that you’ll join us in Seattle!

Submit your proposal for the Interaction Design Education Summit.
