Keynote
EduSummit 2022
The context and scope of interaction design are expanding through more-than-human perspectives. Through a discussion of educational activities and student projects over the past 20 years at Interaction Design at Zurich University of the Arts, this keynote lecture traces the shift from user-centered design to people-centered and, finally to planet- and life-centered design.
Karmen Franinovic
Professor for Interaction Design at the ZHdK
Karmen Franinovic heads the subject area of Interaction Design, leading its strategy processes as well as educational and research content. Karmen conducts projects at Institute for Design Research and teaches in the BA and MA programs. Currently, she is responsible for Doctoral Program development and heads the Enactive Environments Lab.
With her background in architecture, art, and design, Karmen is moved by the desire to explore dynamic and ephemeral processes, be it an urban soundscape, a creative process, a learning experience, or an ecosystem. Questions of interactivity in social, sensorial, and material ecologies are researched by designing technologies that engage bodily and spatial knowledge. Karmen worked on the design of public buildings, participatory public installations, shape-changing, and sonic sculptures, haptic floors, and rehabilitation wearables, among others. Her practical and theoretical outputs challenge established interaction paradigms to foster more situated, reflective, and playful uses of technology.
