A strong interaction design for a device with a UI and physical controls is one that’s integrated across the industrial and digital design from the beginning. But the two disciplines start from such different points: industrial design, from space and physical form, and digital design, from processes that occur over time.
I’ll show how designers can rethink the tools of their trade – sketching, wireframing, prototyping – to start moving towards an integrated practice. Implicit in these examples (and time permitting somewhat more explicit in my talk) will be a different way of thinking about convergent digital/physical design, one that begins from neither space nor time, but somewhere that can encompass both: the moment of interaction.
